When someone wanted to buy a boat while for reasons such as fishing, sailing cruising or just for traveling around, there are a few questions that will pop to mind. One of them is to purchase a new boat or just have a used boat instead.
Some might opt for a brand new boat because of its fresh looks and the nice leathery smell but if you are a beginner, I would recommend buying a used boat first. Here is why you should start out with a used boat first.
First, a used boat is cheaper than a new boat, so you can save a lot of money especially if you buy those luxury boats. If you look around the water, you will see that the little boats are the ones that move, while the big boats are the ones that never move. Those that are too busy earning money and never have the time to go boating should not really have a boat at all.
So, you can buy a practically almost new boat which has very few hours of engine time for less than what the previous owner has paid for it. Please keep in mind that new boats can loss up to half of their original value in less than two years.
With used boats, their previous owners have eliminated problems that are usually associated with new boats such as furnishing the boat with gadgets and boating equipments. They also have hassled with the dealer to get the warranty service taken care of. So, beginners do not have to worry about these problems if you buy a used boat.
A used boat also usually comes with several scratches and dings, so you will not feel so bad if you add a few of your own. However, when you buy a used boat, please keep a couple thousands to out the boat and make necessary repairs.
A used boat will normally come with dock lines, life jackets, spare props, a radio, safety equipment, and other nice additions. New boat owners will have to pay hundreds of dollars for these kinds of things. So, boaters can save a lot of money if they are in budget or use this money to buy other fittings.
However, there is one disadvantage about buying a used boat is that whether the previous owner has done any maintenance on the boat or not. So, prior to buying a used boat, you should hire a boat surveyor to determine if the boat you are buying is in a tip top shape. This way, you will know that you are buying a great used boat.
